Title: Photobucket Alert
Post by: Dave W on June 30, 2017, 07:56:07 PM
Within the past day or two, Photobucket has changed its terms of service to block third party hosting unless you upgrade to a $399 per year premium plan. This also means that if you have a free account (as I do) or a lesser premium account, your hotlinked photos in existing posts here will not show up either.

There are other options for photo hosting, of course, but it's really bad that existing images will be blocked. I'm sure not going to go back through 9+ years of posts to replace all the images I've posted.

http://photobucket.com/p500/

At this point IMHO it would be foolish to trust Photobucket with $399. The site probably won't last.

Good info.  Thanks.  I use my Photobucket account only for building ebay listings, and most my business now is done on Etsy, so I have little use for it.  Anything I have on Photobucket is already on my external drives and saved somewhere.

This leads me to ask: What other sites are you guys using and having good results with?
I don't mind paying a little, but $400.00 a year?! Ain't happening.

If you have your own website ( I know some of you do, for yer biz or whatever), you can use that online space to host yer own pics. You can create a separate subfolder just for such things with lesser security ( still just read only) so as to not compromise the rest of your site.  That's what I do.

Then I have the password protected folders where I share things with e.g. my band or fam that I don't want the whole rest of the Internet to see.

Good idea, Granny G. I own http://colocougs.org and could set up photo hosting for that purpose. I plan to have that site for a long time. I have long been irritated by Hostmonster.com, and am migrating the site to GoDaddy at present. Not sure I will like them better, but every time I have a problem on Hostmonster, I spend an hour with tech support while they tell me why I can't do what I want to do. Hopefully GoDaddy is more responsive and helpful.

I have a LOT of stuff on Photobucket but their site has become increasingly irritating with a deluge of ads that cover content and prevent quick access.  Unfortunately I also have many links to those files.

I guess I'll need to migrate the rest of the stuff to GoDaddy, then add photo hosting.

Photobucket has been a hot mess for a while.  The constant barrage of spam/ads renders it borderline unusable, and I can't see how that would entice anyone to ante up for a paid service.  I suspect they will fade into oblivion with this move, or get bought out for the name and resurrected by someone else.

I switched over to imgur.com, which seems to work well.  Google Photos might be a good alternative too, although I haven't tried it yet (I do like Goolge Drive for cloud storage).

I should clarify that your photos are still on Photobucket (at least for now), you just can't hotlink/embed on another site. If you can't pay them $399 at one whack, you can pay monthly for only $39.99/mo.  :o  By comparison, plenty of webhosts offer unlimited storage space for well under half of that.

Joe is right, Imgur is free and you can hotlink. I just signed up. Haven't moved anything yet but here's a random Canada Day pic hosted on Imgur.

That's a browser issue, not the site itself - however, it is indeed loaded with ads and very slow to respond. If I can't hotlink to it, I have no use for it.

No, it's not a browser issue. Looks that way for me in all my browsers. I suspect they may be overloaded from people moving their photos.

I can't see my previous photos either (they're all on my hard drive anyway) but I was able to log in and the percentage of my capacity in use still shows the same. So I don't think Photobucket has shut down yet. Something's up for sure, though.

Apologies. I was using Imagesomething (it has already escaped me). I went in and got a notice saying they were shutting down end of June, so I cleared it out and closed my account. No big loss since I only use these sites to post bass pics in Forums. It was easy to use though.

So I signed up on Imgur last week and loaded it up for future.

Unfortunately all the links for everything I've posted here so far are broken.

I was able to log in to Photobucket yesterday and downloaded all of my albums. I had my daughters HS graduation pics in there and needed to grab those before anything else changed. Will take a look at Imgur as another option but at least I have all of my pics stored in a couple of backups at home.

How did you even get in?!

Just tried again- three different systems, 2-3 different browsers on each, still getting broken pages similar to the screenshot I posted.

Dave's probably right- high volume of people all trying to get their content out at the same time.

My Photobucket seems to come up fine using Microsoft Edge, but with Microsoft Explorer it looks funky. How do you download your photos back to a directory on your computer?

The good news is that existing Photobucket links here seem to be visible now, including George's famous Thunderbird pickup reflection. I'll be surprised if that lasts, though.

Also, their login page is back to normal now (in Firefox), I logged in fine tonight, everything's still there, but the right hand boxes where you can copy the image URL aren't functioning.

I don't know if there's a way to download an album all at once, but you can bring up each photo individually then right click and save.

I hope my efforts to thoroughly smash that stereotype have been successful (sorry).

That seems to have worked. My account says I have used 40% of my space, which is around 500 shots. Wonder why I can get in and others can't? Only business I've ever done with them was ordering a canvas print from them last Christmas. That can't be enough to give me any kind of "membership".

Obviously they've walked back their earlier message, since I only have a free account and yet I can now do it again. But that meter shows you have used up 100% of your 3rd party hosting capacity, whatever that is. How many images do you post at TB? Lots more traffic there. And do you share directly from Photobucket to FB? If so, that could account for some of it too.

My account settings show I'm only using 5% of my free hosting capacity but it says nothing about how much 3rd party hosting I've used up. So I'll be using Imgur for future hosting to be on the safe side.

Mine says 3% of storage used. Everything seems to work fine. Maybe they just think Minnesota guys are cool...................
Where it says, "We have updated our terms of service; "LEARN MORE"", I have never clicked the LEARN MORE button. I was wondering if by clicking that, they would consider you officially notified & terminate your third party service. I use to receive emails from them occasionally, but not for a long time...............

I've seen some posts on other forums displaying the same meter that Mark's photos show. There doesn't seem to be a way to know when you're near the limit since it depends on how many views you get. You could have plenty of storage capacity and still hit your 3rd party limit.

I figured out how to download albums from the Photobucket account.

Click an album title and on the lower right side of that page (once you get the ads cleared off) is a link to Download Album.

THEN they put you through one of those agonizing "I'm not a robot" exercises where you click on pictures for a couple of minutes. Makes me nuts.

Finally, you get to the "Please Download" link, where it will compress the files and download them as a zip file.  More waiting for this step.

Note: if a folder has sub-folders, those are not downloaded as part of the mother folder. You have to click on each of the sub-folder titles and download them separately.

It all moves slower than molasses in a deep freeze, and I have to log out and back in pretty frequently when it stops responding.

I'm headed to Imgur once I figure out its interface.

If you're not looking at your own uploads, you can still right click and copy image location of a jpeg or gif and paste the location here within img brackets. Doesn't work with a video though, looks like you'd have to download to your hard drive and then upload to your account.

Photobucket does let you keep your albums private. Mine are all private. It means that the public can see the photo you've posted but they can't scroll through your album to see anything else. With imgur, the link doesn't lead to your username anyway, so I'm guessing it just means your pics are hidden to the general public unless you post a specific link to them.

Not a fun process.  I have also seen this situation written up in other forums and news sites as "breaking the Internet."

Not all, but a couple. Saw her in concert twice or thrice too. She's had good and not so good phases. When she's good, she has charm. No one will mistake her voice for Whitney Houston's, but with Nena you forgive her the duff notes. Mind you, this here is a performance

of a 56-year old mother of five children (her first son lived only a year, there was no saving him, so she took a one year sabbatical from her career in 1988 and lived with him on an island so she could spend with him intensively what little time he still had to live) and - meanwhile - even threesome grandmother.

Granny Nena is ok in my book. Talking about books, here's some singing from the American (hey, come to think of it: even Minnesotan!) Folk Song Book with her kids (three sons, one daughter).

Nena probably sings more bum notes than even Marlene did on the German original, but I'm happy vee häff herrr!

Nena in her 50s is way hotter than Taylor Swift in her 20s. No Whiney Houston? That's a plus in my book.

What's that strange word you have for it? Mela or meli ... something?

I don't particularly care if she's hot or not, and I *do* have the excuse of having a daughter who's obsessed with her, but I've come around to like Taylor. There, I said it.

She's neither particularly good nor bad as a singer or guitarist.  What she is, is a first rate modern pop songwriter / collaborator.  Very hooky and a lot of them are quite narrative - common in her original genre of country, but refreshing in top-40 pop.  Granted she has the usual stable of A-list songwriters at her disposal, so who knows what she'd be like out on her own, but I don't particularly care; there's something distinctive and characteristic about her work, she delivers it very well, and I enjoy it.

Melisma. Or as a recording engineer friend calls it, soul yodeling.  :)

I have nothing against Taylor Swift. She uses auto tune but that's common today in mass market pop.

A genuine phallic reflection or one that causes Uwe's imagination to run wild?

U-hummmmm!!!, for the avoidance of confusion of our younger readers who deserve protection from this endless innuendo of unfiltered filth: It wasn't me

at the time who pointed out the member reflection! I would have never said a thing, it's ingrained in my cultural tolerance to be accepting ("He's from Utah, maybe they all play their TBirds naked there and wake up in dresses ...").

She doesn't have the strongest voice, but she's no bimbo and the songwriting is more than decent for mass market appeal pop. I find Lady Gaga more off the wall and musically interesting, but Taylor is alright. We've had worse mass phenomena. Kudos for breaking out of that new country pop mold at a time when commercially speaking she had absolutely no reason to do so.

The new haircut is better than those girlie curlies she used to have too.

LOL that's perfect!   It can be almost as offensive to my ear as "yarling" which thankfully is no longer in fashion.  http://www.endino.com/archive/yarl.html

I never heard the term yarling until 2 or 3 years ago. When I read what it was, first thing that popped into my mind was a former co-worker who did a hilarious impersonation of Eddie Vedder doing exactly that.

Bite your tongue, man, I am a born and bred Los Angeleno! I imagine it was all those years in 1980s Hollywood that made me comfortable both in a dress and hanging my dirlywanger in front of any available reflective surface.

I have been downloading albums as time permits for three days....still working on it.  Can't count how many times I've had to logout and back in. Their download process breaks constantly!

Obviously we can't rely on cloud companies to keep to their original terms. Or for that matter, to stay in business at all. Remember Club Photo? They suddenly went down and never came back. Later they offered to sell its former customers CDs of their own photos. I remember that Steve Barr lost many thousands of photos, and even though he had been paying them hundreds per month for photo hosting, they still wanted several thousand dollars for CDS. He said forget it.

Fortunately all my photos are already on my hard drive. Only reason I even opened an account was for the 3rd party hosting.

Same for me. I notice that more forums (like this one) are enabling direct uploads of photos, which renders the need mostly moot - although you have to be posting from a device with the photo in it.
