A longtime sales guy for the former Knut-Koupee Music in Minneapolis started a Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/groups/254525368231308/) awhile back. In the past few days he's posted loads of old ads from Guitar Player. Plenty of interesting stuff, including these.

I've seen some crazy 8 string conversions but that's actually kind of cool. At least it doesn't involve carving up the headstock like a lot of them.

Some things are just not meant to be. Like an 8-string P. :o Don't mess with Creation. Especially when your god is called Leo.

If you wanted an easy 8 string conversion, why not a Fender (or Fender-style)? Just as valid as any other brand. Two of the endorsers were Will Lee and Neil Jason, both J players.
Besides, the ad shows it on a P. It was probably designed with Fender in mind.

I just googled for 8-string Precision and the results... ...it kinda hurts.
Rickenbacker made 8-strings, Gibson had some very rudely made 8-strings for TM Stevens (Uwe has one), Ibanez made 8-strings, of course my religion Warwick does. It is strange: Fender made 12-string guitars, short, medium and long scale basses, hollow bodies, fretless but I have never seen a (Custom Shop) 8-string.

Fairly certain I played that red Precision above. Looks like that pic is from the Bass NorthWest page. If not that one, than another Octapus converted Precision. I really liked it. Standard Precision ergonomics, not so standard sound.

I didn't keep all of my guitar mags, but I do still have a box full of manufacturer brochures. Dug some out a few years ago and took a photo... Fun to look back at 'em.

It's an easy enough conversion, I'll give it that, and any Fender neck will probably be sturdier with the extra pull than my beloved Ric 4003S/8!!!

I played this beast (https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10210181314426776&set=a.1603791812144.2087112.1156586316&type=3&theater) briefly at the owner's house last year not long after he bought it. Apparently the same one in this thread (https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10208865400295895&set=gm.373163373034173&type=3&theater) from December, since it was supposedly the only doubleneck made in that color. It was certainly well made and in great shape. IIRC Jim said he paid $900 for it.
I ought to go over to Music Go Round and check the P/J out.

Did you ever get that resolved to your satisfaction?
1. Ibanez steel rods rather than Ric ones (the Ibanez ones are thicker, but fit in the routings)
2. defret, neck shaved, refret
2. countersunk bridge
3. thin gauge strings
3. regular adjustments!
Little things like that, nothing major. It basically came perfect from the factory. :mrgreen: :mrgreen: :mrgreen:
