I'm at peace with that, they don't have to die on a tour bus for me. 50th anniversary is a good time to close the book - when they were basically "casted"/put together by a bunch of semi-wealthy business men that hoped to be the next Brian Epsteins and Andrew Loog Oldhams in 1968, who would have thought that they would exist for 50 years (minus the 8 year hibernation from 1976 to 1984)? They've had a great run and only 2 out of 13 members have left us.

Alas!, with DP ending, 'tis time for me too then ...

They've been sounding this progggy for a while. It's Don Airey's prog roots (he played in Jon Hiseman's Colosseum II before earning proper money as everybody's favorite heavy rock keyboard sideman) coming through, he's unleashed with DP and Steve Morse (himself no stranger to prog) is gracious enough to give him all that room. These days, DP is an organ-driven band (more so than they were in Deep Purple line ups of yore with the possible exception of Mk I - Hush era) with a very good guitarist playing contently second fiddle. Deep Purple's sound was always shaped by a Hammond loud in the mix, but Don Airey has upped the ante.

And Gillan's vocal lines which have always avoided the obvious and ear-friendly (to the chagrin of Blackmore) only add to the prog flavor because he only writes them after the band has finished recording its instrumental work completely. They don't "make room" for him. He only recently repeated that DP is essentially an instrumental band and that he "gets to sing a little over their music". He drove Sabbath nuts during the recording of Born Again as they were unused to his process. They would play parts to him and ask him whether he regarded it as a verse or a chorus and he'd say: "I dunno, finish the song, and then I'll decide what to sing."

This song here owes more to ELP once it starts (around 1:40) than traditional DP:

Didn't really know Airey's history. But DUH - Steve Morse! Makes a lot of sense now.

Colosseum II were sort of a white boy's wet dream of jazz fusion prog metal - King Crimson fans will probably approve.

Dave W? Not so much.  ;D

Don's next band was somewhat less demanding on the ears, the drummer would later on get him a job in Rainbow.

Snow on the water. Well, you've got to do something to keep your, errm, pole position.

They look like Free Folk/Wildlings extras from Game of Thrones, but it is not photoshopped, it's actually a recent promo shot at the Baltic Sea in winter. DP have certainly had worse promo shots in their not very image-conscious past!  :-X

They're deliberating about it and say "never say never", but it seems so. Ian Paice suffered a light stroke recently, Glover has had knee operations and a small child he'd like to be there for, Morse has never been a great friend of touring, he likes to be on his tractor at his Florida farm, Gillan doesn't go out on tour anymore - he has seen everything several times over, he says - and recuperates on a bed made for him behind the drum kit when he is not singing. The only fanatic tour junkie is Don Airey, he explores every city they play and has his son with him as his stage tech.

Last saw Morse with D Dregs, supporting Sea Level, and Airey in Rainbow (with Glover, of course, and that other fellow)... not seen Coverdale since the "original" Whitesnake went their separate ways either...

Alice makes for an interesting opener. Ol' Vince Furnier made a comment that his next album would represent a reunion of sorts of the original Alice Cooper Band.  He even hinted at doing some shows with some of the guys. As much as I enjoy watching Nita Strauss wiggle about the stage I wouldn't mind seeing the Dunaway, Bruce and Smith up there.

 I did........
An unforgettable show, my very first concert and first date - My Pops had to drive us from suburbia to The Colisuem (on the '62 World's Fair Site near the Space Needle) for the show, for me Alice without this version of the band just wasn't as cool and I lost interest. That was a very good evening  ;)

The old (or: original) Alice Cooper Band had something dangerous, garage, edgy, underground and at the same time carefree. Add those early Zappa influences. They were more MC5, Doors, New York Dolls or Stooges than, say, Grand Funk Railroad, Aerosmith, Kiss or Foghat. To be fair, even the original band already began to lose that somewhat around Billion Dollar Babies. And the Jack Douglas-produced Muscle of Love that followed was perhaps already a bit too much in the Aerosmith stadium rock vein (though still a solid rock album), the Alice Cooper Band had left the garage for good by then and Alice had gone for a stroll to the golf course, unfortunately he never returned.

Everything concerning Alice that came after (and there were some great, even superior musicians involved) was/is just an - entertaining - Vaudeville show. More Addams Family than a society question mark. He has become the Vincent Price of rock when perhaps he could have been Dennis Hopper - he wouldn't take that as an insult either, he is a creature of his own creation.

Dave Hill was even in his most shocking moments good fun, there was nothing threatening about him. The original Alice Cooper Band all looked like they were either taling or selling heroin. I was fascinated by that look too, they looked like a longhaired street gang straight out of Clockwork Orange or Warriors.

I was unaware of yet another Zappa connection! You live and learn.

Funnily enough, I never saw the original Alice Cooper as androgynous (lots of bands robbed their mother's wardrobe back then), they looked like a gang, even dangerously male to me. Bowie (in his Ziggy guise, but also as the Thin White Duke) looked and acted feminine/androgynous to me, but I never thought him gay.

The first band I really consciously noticed as "drag" (even though I didn't know the term back then) were the New York Dolls (a couple of years later than the original Alice Cooper). Though if you witnessed David Johansen live on stage, there was nothing effeminate or even androgynous about him, he was a very male'ish New York loudmouth - and I loved him for it!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ctg5FCS1wCM

In contrast, Jobriath had a decidedly gay aura - it's more than just wearing women's fashion you know. Back then, I didn't realize that though, looking at it today it's patently obvious that there was a difference to Alice Cooper, Bowie or the Dolls.

Of course, I have all albums from Auntie Alice! I knew that in their formative years they were on his label, he discovered and produced them, but that commercial success only came with Bob Ezrin's studio production magic and co-songwriting as well as - vital for Alice Cooper -) arrangements magic from the third album - Love it to Death - onward. What I had not known was the GTO connection as another branch from/to the Zappa camp.

Great song. Excellent bass playing and bass sound. That's the P I'm hearing there, right? Not the Vigier, surely.

@Uwe: the synth solo reminded me of Peter Bardens. In a good way.

Yup, Ezrin's beloved and holy studio P. He almost strangled Glover when the latter recommended a string change after two decades or so.  ;D

Wonder if that is the P you hear on Another Brick in the Wall too (Waters "disco" bass being Ezrin's idea).

Belated realisation:

LOL - there is a cover of The Doors' Roadhouse Blues (Gillan being The Doors nut he always was) on the album and I'm reading the lyrics for the first time.

Throughout the last five decades I would have sworn I heard how either Jim Morrison or Alan Lancaster (Status Quo) or Eric Bloom (BÖC) all sang

"I should have laid ya, I should have made ya ...
 .. give up your vows"

Now I read it's

"Ashen Lady, ashen Lady
Give up your vows"

I'm kinda ashen with disappointment now.  :-\

I've always heard it as "ashen lady"...online references seem to confirm.

It's comforting to know that Uwe's ears can be as misled as mine usually are when trying to decipher lyrics of popular music.

Excepting Sturgill Simpson, who I enjoy but their specialty seems to be TOTALLY incomprehensible mumbling in place of lyrics...so no one can understand them. Much of their stuff is mellow, but this one really (incomprehensibly) rocks.
